Japanese Stock Market Rises 0.16% Amid Strong Performance in Shipbuilding, Mining, and Chemical Sectors

On Tuesday, the stock market in Japan closed higher, with the Nikkei 225 index rising by 0.16%. The gains in the stock market are due to positive performance in the shipbuilding, mining, chemical, petroleum, and plastic sectors.

The Nikkei 225 stock market index tracks the performance of 225 large and publicly-traded companies listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. It is a widely-used benchmark for the Japanese stock market.

Top Performers of the Nikkei 225 Session

Takashimaya Co., Ltd., Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd., and Shiseido Co., Ltd. were the top performers of the session. The stock prices of these companies rose significantly compared to the other companies listed on the Nikkei 225.

Takashimaya Co., Ltd. saw its stock price rise by 7.14%, or 122.00 points, to close at 1,830.00. Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd. saw its stock price rise by 7.01% or 97.00 points, to close at 1,481.00. And Shiseido Co., Ltd. saw its stock price rise by 6.12%, or 374.00 points, to close at 6,488.00.

Worst of the Nikkei 225 Session

The worst performers of the session on the Nikkei 225 were Hino Motors, Ltd., Yokogawa Electric Corp., and Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. This means that the stock prices of these companies fell significantly compared to the other companies listed on the Nikkei 225.

Hino Motors, Ltd. saw its stock price fall by 2.13%, or 11.00 points, to close at 505.00. Yokogawa Electric Corp. saw its stock price fall by 1.96%, or 43.00 points, to close at 2,151.00. And Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. saw its stock price fall by 1.83% or 9.00 points, to close at 483.00.

Overall Performance of the Nikkei 225 Index

More stocks increased in value compared to those that decreased. This increase is reflected in the number of rising stocks, 2438, while the number of declining stocks was 1131. On the other hand, 267 assets remained unchanged in value.

One company, Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd., saw its stock rise to a 5-year high. The stock gained 7.01% or 97.00, increasing its value by that amount. The current price of the stock is 1,481.00.

The Nikkei Volatility, a measure of the expected price fluctuation of the Nikkei 225 index, declined 4.21% to 19.3 while crude oil prices rose by 0.40% to $79.88 per barrel. Meanwhile, the cost of Brent oil for March delivery increased 0.34% to $84.79 per barrel, and gold futures for February rose 0.60% to $1,814.95 per troy ounce.

Forex market: the value of the US dollar against the Japanese yen remained unchanged at 132.85, while the euro gained 0.26% against the yen to 141.66. The US Dollar Index Futures, which tracks the performance of the US dollar against a basket of major currencies, fell 0.37% to 103.62.
